I first encountered baccalaureate education while working at a Japanese school overseas. There was a baccalaureate department in the same building and we shared a gymnasium. One day I had the opportunity to watch the baccalaureate department practice their graduation ceremony. I was overwhelmed by the difference in culture and beliefs. They were on stage playing violins and flutes. Their performances are not that great. But they all had smiles on their faces. Of course, the teachers who were watching them were also full of smiles. After that, I began to seriously consider what I should do to help children live with music.
I took a workshop on baccalaureate education. I also became friends with the baccalaureate music teacher at the time and observed many of her classes.
She was creating classes that incorporated Dalcroze, Kodaly, and Orff. And we had a lot in common. I think I was very fortunate.
I continue to use this resource today to deepen my understanding of baccalaureate education.
